Uff da. Folkens, 2017-kappløpet om å bli «årets største skuffelse på kino» er for alvor i gang.
Anmeldelsene for Stephen King-filmen «The Dark Tower» med Idris Elba og Matthew McConaughey er nemlig ute, og resultatet er akkurat nedslående som det folk har fryktet.
Det var allerede kjent at produksjonen hadde hatt problemer, spesielt i postproduksjonsfasen («for mange kokker»-syndromet, ifølge en Variety-reportasje), og resultatet ser ut til å ha blitt en filmopplevelse som i beste fall er middelmådig.
Og i verste fall?
Vel.
«Hva faen skjedde?» spør Uproxx, som virker temmelig sjokkert over hva de har sett:
«I’m going to be honest with you: I kind of want you to see this movie so I have more people to discuss it with. Right now, I feel like a crazy person spouting about some upcoming Biblical doom. I want people to see this movie so you can see the same horrors that I did and try to make sense of them. See, that’s the thing: I want to make sense of this so that it can’t ever happen again. I desperately want to know how something that seems like such a surefire idea can go so terribly wrong.»
The Guardians to-av-fem-stjerner-anmeldelse sammenligner opplevelsen av å se filmen med den nær ikke-eksisterende korttidshukommelsen til hovedpersonen i Memento (ingenting fester seg, og handlingen er glemt før du forlater kinoen), og gir filmens danske regissør Nikolaj Arcel strykkarakter:
«There’s a point somewhere in the misshapen second act that an attentive viewer can feel all the parties involved giving up and resolving to get the rest of the movie over with as soon as possible. Arcel directs through the path of least resistance, pointing his camera at people as indifferently as he shoots the half-baked CGI sequences. The shambolic script collapses when it lurches out of its first half-hour, unable to provide such basic foundational components of storytelling as ‘stakes’ or ‘character motivation’.»
USA Today skryter av Idris Elba, men ikke av særlig mye annet:
«So much potential in terms of star power and source material goes to waste simply because it seems like the filmmakers couldn’t figure out what movie to make. Dark Tower tosses out a lot of plot threads that never go anywhere and even the ending is rushed, like somebody forgot to study for an essay test and then has to B.S. their way out of a failing grade.»
Collider melder at filmens magre budsjett får den til å virke puslete der den burde vært episk, samtidig som den heller ikke har for mye å tilby fans av bøkene:
«I’ve never read any of King’s work, but I saw the film with a friend who’s read all of ‘The Dark Tower’ novels and he told me that the movie takes a few of the characters, a few locations, and that’s it. The story is completely different. So that leaves me (and my friend) wondering who exactly this movie is for. It probably won’t please people who have waited decades to see ‘The Dark Tower’ on the big screen, and it won’t please audiences who just want a fun fantasy action movie.»
IGNs anmelder, en fan av bøkene, er noe mer positiv, men kaller filmen et pent skall og påpeker at det er vanskelig å skjønne hva som motiverer rollefigurene til å handle som de gjør:
«As a fan of the series, I came into the theater knowing the answer to many of these questions. But a standalone movie absolutely shouldn’t have 5,000 pages of prior required reading in order to understand the reason for its central conflict.»
The Hollywood Reporter er noe mer positiv, men tviler på at dette er starten på en lang og fruktbar filmserie:
«Though far from the muddled train wreck we’ve been led to expect, this Tower lacks the world-constructing gravitas of either the Tolkien books that inspired King or the franchise-launching movies that Sony execs surely have in mind. Though satisfying enough to please many casual moviegoers drawn in by King’s name and stars Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey, it will likely disappoint many serious fans and leave other newbies underwhelmed.»
Den mest positive anmeldelsen kommer fra Variety, som later til å sette pris på filmen som enkel lavterskel-underholdning.
«’The Dark Tower’ has been plagued by tales of last-minute re-editing and multiple cooks in the kitchen, but the movie that’s come out of all this is no shambles. It aims low and hits (sort of). It’s a competent and watchable paranoid metaphysical video game that doesn’t overstay its welcome, includes some luridly entertaining visual effects, and — it has to be said — summons an emotional impact of close to zero. Which in a film like this one isn’t necessarily a disadvantage.»
Med skarve 18 prosent på Rotten Tomatoes og slakt eller skuldertrekk nær sagt over hele linja ligger «The Dark Tower» nå an til å bli en av årets største flopper – og sjansene for oppfølgerfilmer og en tv-serie basert på Kings bøker har sunket betraktelig.
Trøsten (for filmstudioene Sony Pictures og MCR) får være at den har salgbare navn (King, Elba og McConaughey) og et relativt beskjedent budsjett på bare 60 millioner dollar, noe som gir den litt kortere vei til å hente seg inn økonomisk enn andre mageplask i samme sjanger.
